Two-dimensional nanosheets for sensing: synthesis and spectroscopic study
Dr A Chauvet, Dr J Foster
Application Deadline: 31 March 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

The goal of this project is to enhance the selectivity of graphene-based sensors by adding a layer of another 2D material. metal-organic nanosheets (MONs).
PhD position in the field of nonlinear and quantum optics with polaritons in semiconductor nanostructures
  Research Group: Inorganic Semiconductors
  Dr D Krizhanovskii
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Recent advances in semiconductor nano-technology lead to a new generation of robust controllable structures where manipulation of coupling between light and matter can be performed on a submicrometer scale.
Nano-magnetism in atomically thin 2D quantum materials and their heterostructures
  Research Group: Inorganic Semiconductors
  Prof A Tartakovskii
Applications accepted all year round

PhD Type

Following the discovery of graphene, a large family of layered crystals has attracted significant attention. The properties of these materials range from superconductors and metals, to semiconductors and insulators.
Strong light-matter interaction in van der Waals 2D materials: discovery of novel quantum states of the matter
  Research Group: Inorganic Semiconductors
  Prof A Tartakovskii
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The isolation of single-atomic layer graphene has led to a surge of interest in a large family of layered crystals with strong in-plane bonds and weak van der Waals interlayer coupling.
Van der Waals 2D materials: optical manifestations of the quantum physics of moiré superlattices
  Research Group: Inorganic Semiconductors
  Prof A Tartakovskii
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Atomically-thin layers of two-dimensional materials can be assembled in vertical stacks (called ‘heterostructures’), which are held together by relatively weak van der Waals forces, allowing for coupling between monolayer crystals with incommensurate lattices and arbitrary mutual rotation, or ‘twist’.
  Sub-wavelength all-dielectric nano-photonics: 2D materials and beyond
  Research Group: Inorganic Semiconductors
  Prof A Tartakovskii
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

So far nano-photonics has dealt with dielectric devices relying on confining light in diffraction-limited volumes. Beating the diffraction limit by confining light on sub-wavelength scales has been only possible with plasmonic structures made of nano-structured metal, which unavoidably suffer from large optical losses.
