Next-generation protein engineering: integration of ab-initio modelling, high-throughput screening and structural fingerprinting by mass spectrometry.
Research Group: BBSRC White Rose DTP
Dr E Paci, Dr D Tomlinson, Prof F. Sobott
Application Deadline: 6 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Recombinant proteins are playing an ever-increasing role as therapeutics and reagents in biotechnology. Rationally engineering proteins requires understanding of the principles behind protein interactions.
Defining novel regulators of cancer cell invasion
Prof M Parsons, Prof J Marshall
Application Deadline: 29 November 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

The cytoskeleton of cells is known to be essential to the behaviour of cancer cells and their ability to invade throughout the body.
Identifying pharmacological targets for osteoporosis intervention using whole-genome and exome sequencing of bone related phenotypes
  Dr J Kemp
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Osteoporosis (OP) is an often asymptomatic multi-factorial condition that is characterized by a progressive loss of bone mass resulting in increased fracture (FX) risk and reduced lifespan(1).
Retinal vessel size and shape associations with brain structure and function
Prof AR Rudnicka, Dr C Frost
Application Deadline: 1 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

The size and shape of retinal vessels might be early markers of decline in cognitive function and dementia. We have used novel artificial intelligence enhanced automated software to generate a rich quantitative characterization of retinal vessels in UK Biobank participants who underwent retinal imaging.
Precision Medicine DTP - Developing Personalised Precision Medical Approaches for Paediatric Intensive Care through Data Informatics and Machine Learning on the Impact of Acute Clinical and Physiological Phenotypes on Outcome
Dr J Escudero Rodriguez, Dr T Lo, Dr L Moss
Application Deadline: 8 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Background. Routine clinical practice generates a large amount of data that is under-used for research and quality improvement[1].
Understanding and dissecting microbial communities with Raman spectroscopy
  Prof R Goodacre
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

We have shown that it is possible to label bacteria with heavy isotopes of carbon (13C) and nitrogen (15N) and this incorporation within cellular biomass of heavy isotopes has led to significant shifts in certain vibrational modes from amino acids and nucleic acids that can be readily detected with Raman spectroscopy.
MRC DiMeN Doctoral Training Partnership: DUB-ing chronic inflammation: a drug repurposing approach to target deubiquitinases in inflammatory disease
Dr H Ismail, Prof S Renshaw, Dr L Guo
Application Deadline: 6 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Background. Inflammation is an essential defence mechanism adapted by our bodies to eliminate damaged cells, irritants and pathogens.
