Energy Technologies (oil) PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships

We have 11 Energy Technologies (oil) PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships

Modelling and simulation of heat exchanger with strong dependence of oil viscosity on temperature

The heating of oil and oil products is widely used to reduce energy losses during transportation. An approach will be developed to determine the effective length of the heat exchanger and the temperature of the cold coolant (oil) at its outlet in the case of a strong dependence of oil viscosity on temperature. Experimental study of ion transport in subsurface media for renewable energy storage

These projects are open to students worldwide, but have no funding attached. Therefore, the successful applicant will be expected to fund tuition fees at the relevant level (home or international) and any applicable additional research costs. Read more

Water lubricated compressor bearings

Supervisory Team:  Robert Wood, Julian Wharton and Ahmed Kovacevic (City, Uni of London). Project description. Compressors consume energy, but their use in mechanical vapour recompression (MVR) and heat pumps will continue to play an important role that contributes towards Carbon Neutrality in society. Ultrasound Based Technology for Removal of Scale from Downhole Production Tubing

These projects are open to students worldwide, but have no funding attached. Therefore, the successful applicant will be expected to fund tuition fees at the relevant level (home or international) and any applicable additional research costs. Read more

Binks Institute for Sustainability: Improving the Reliability and Economy of Anchors for Floating Offshore Wind Energy

As a part of efforts to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, the UK offshore wind turbine capacity had reached 13.7 GW by 2022, but a higher growth rate is required to meet the target of 50 GW of installed capacity by 2030. Read more

Modelling of microbial induced hydrogen loss for underground hydrogen storage

Hydrogen is identified to play a key role in the UK’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. To meet this target, the UK needs hydrogen storage capacity of at least 15 TWh (~ 450k tonnes) meet short-term and seasonal supply and demand variability. Read more

Gravity separation of emulsions. Collisions of droplets

Supervisory Team.   Dr Anatoliy Vorobev. Project description. The separation of colloidal systems under the influence of gravity is a physical phenomenon encountered in a myriad of industrial processes throughout the food, chemical, petroleum, and hydrometallurgical industries. Read more
