Lowering reuse costs by reducing fouling on immersed structures - National Decommissioning Centre
Prof M Jaspars, Prof F Kuepper
Application Deadline: 14 February 2019
Fouling on marine immersed structures is a multi-billion pound issue for the offshore industry, requiring mechanical removal of foulants.
A new biomaterial-based approach to promote spinal cord repair
Dr W Huang, Dr D Shewan
Application Deadline: 11 February 2019
Medical Research Scotland. PhD Studentship Award. This project is one of 9 four-year PhD Studentships funded by Medical Research Scotland (http://www.medicalresearchscotland.org.uk) to be delivered jointly by the named University and Company.
Biological implications of genetics variation in rice for mycorrhizal colonisation.
  Prof A Price
Applications accepted all year round
We have demonstrated repeatable and substantial differences in the colonisation of rice cultivars by the model arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus Rizophagus irregularis and mapped quantitative trait loci for the variation.
Physiological and molecular characterisation of altered root hydraulic properties in rice due to allelic variation or genetic manipulation of plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIPs, a class of aquaporins)
  Prof A Price
Applications accepted all year round
A cluster of three PIPs on chromosome 7 of rice are all candidate genes for a drought avoidance locus. These genes are highly expressed in roots and thought to have a major role in root hydraulic conductance.
Developing new environmentally-friendly solutions for well plugging and abandonment (well P&A)
Dr A Sharifi, Dr R Rafati
Applications accepted all year round
Hydrocarbon leakage from subsurface environments has been a critical concern for groundwater resources and atmospheric pollutions.
Experimental study and data mining of microbial enhanced oil recovery processes
Dr A Sharifi, Dr R Rafati
Applications accepted all year round
Enhanced oil recovery processes have been developing fast over the last 2 decades to improve both the economics and efficiency of hydrocarbon recovery.
Hybrid Catalytic Systems for Sustainable Chemical Processing
  Dr X Wang, Dr D Vega-Maza
Application Deadline: 28 February 2019
Catalysis plays a critical role in modern society, where 90% of all chemical processes involve heterogeneous catalysts. Nevertheless, heterogeneous and biological catalysis is still considered as one of the top 24 challenges in chemistry when asking “what’s next”.
Functional magnetic nanomaterials as the next generation of bioproducts for healthcare applications
  Dr A Fernandez-Castane
Applications accepted all year round
A three-year project for doctoral studies is offered to support the application of highly motivated graduates willing to pursue their PhD studies.
Training-induced changes in the cerebral processing of sound.
  Dr P Bestelmeyer
Application Deadline: 1 February 2019
Project rationale and description. The project will focus on training-induced changes in the cerebral processing of sound in healthy participants as well as participants with mild or moderate hearing loss.
Conversion of Wastewaters and Organic Waste into Chemicals, Energy and Organic Fertiliser.
  Dr D Dionisi, Dr G I Paton
Application Deadline: 31 January 2019
Background. In Scotland over 300 million cubic meters of municipal wastewaters and 5 million tonnes of organic waste, as dry matter, (e.g.
