  Nanoparticles in drug delivery
Dr G Stenbeck, Dr U Kishore
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Nanoparticles (NPs) are materials with overall dimensions in the nano scale range (5nm-100nm). Due to their unique physicochemical properties, they have found a wide range of applications and are currently explored as drug and gene delivery vehicles.
Seeking critical branch points in bacterial evolution with comparative genomics
Prof N Saunders, Mr A Khan
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

This is a bioinformatics and comparative genomics-focussed project, seeking to identify the basis of speciation and sub-speciation of bacterial species accounting for the development of individual and independent lineages.
Multitasking abilities – Are computerised laboratory tasks predictive of real-world tasks?
Dr A Szameitat, Dr A Parton
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Multitasking, i.e. the concurrent performance of two or more tasks, has been investigated in many different domains. In Cognitive Psychology, experimental paradigms such as the task switching paradigm or the dual-task paradigm of the Psychological Refractory Period (PRP) are the most widely used multitasking paradigms.
Developing a clinical tool to quantitatively assess and monitor upper limb and shoulder function in clinical and home settings
  Dr A Shaheen
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Upper limb and shoulder disorders are poorly defined, diagnosed and rehabilitated. Current management of these disorders is focussed on the prescription of physiotherapeutic treatments, yet the efficacy of such treatments is not well established and the prognosis of patients with shoulder disorders is very poor.
BBSRC Case Studentship: A novel approach to Biopharm cell line selection using advanced molecular microscopy and chemical profiling.
Dr P Watson, Prof P Borri, Prof W Langbein
Application Deadline: 21 June 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

Cultured cell lines have great potential within the pharmaceutical industry for the production of biotherapeutics. Our understanding of the cellular, metabolic and genetic mechanisms underpinning various biological processes within “producer” cell lines are not fully understood.
PhD in "Biomechanics and biomedical engineering in reconstructive foot & ankle surgery”
Dr P Zioupos, Dr S Junaid
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Applications are invited for a three year EPSRC Doctoral training Partnership Postgraduate studentship, supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to be undertaken within the Biomedical Engineering Research Unit at Aston University and the Forensics Biomechanics Laboratory in Cranfield University.
Investigating the enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat straw and production of biogas fuel by microbial co-cultures of anaerobic fungi and methanogensPhD Studentship (36 months funding)
  Dr M Reilly
Application Deadline: 28 June 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

Background. Industrial anaerobic digestion (AD) can be used to convert a wide range of biomass sources (or feedstock) such as food-wastes, farm slurries, sewage sludge and purpose-grown agricultural crops into renewable biogas fuel.
Doctor of Engineering (EngD) - Graph Convolutional Neural Networks for Medical Image Analysis
  Prof D Reid
Application Deadline: 30 July 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

All projects co-funded by the CDT must have sufficient depth and scope to support a doctoral thesis. In making this assessment we therefore require all abstracts to address the following points, and will return abstracts for revision if any points are not addressed explicitly.
Doctor of Engineering (EngD): Biomedical imaging and signal processing for the intra-operative detection of cancerous tissue (Lightpoint Medical)
Prof D Reid, Prof R Thomson
Application Deadline: 30 July 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

The EngD is an alternative to a traditional PhD aimed at students wanting a career in industry. Students spend about 75% of their time working directly with a company in addition to receiving advanced-level training from a broad portfolio of technical and business courses.
Combining Machine Learning, Molecular Dynamics and Membrane Biophysics to identify new therapeutics for the treatment of Tuberculosis
  Dr I Gould
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Funded by the CDT in Chemical Biology. Innovation in Life Sciences – 1+3 year PhD studentships. Supervisors. Professor Ian Gould | Dr Nick Brooks | Professor Bernadette Byrne.
