Triassic Sedimentology, Stratigraphy and Basin Development in the Ula Field Area, Norway - Aker BP
Prof A Hartley, Prof D Jolley
Application Deadline: 29 July 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

Triassic strata remain a potentially untapped resource in the Ula Field and surrounding areas of the Norwegian sector. To date only limited sedimentological and stratigraphic information are available for the Triassic strata in this area.
Hydraulically fractured reservoirs and optimising EOR processes
Dr A Sharifi, Dr R Rafati, Dr M Manzari
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Hydraulic fracturing is a method of producing hydrocarbons from shale reservoirs. Understanding the geomechanics of the reservoir is a key factor to predicting the fracture propagation and fluid flow in this type of rocks.
Investigation of enhanced oil recovery processes in complex fractured reservoirs
Dr A Sharifi, Dr R Rafati
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Oil recovery from fractured reservoirs is a complex process due to the presence of high-permeability fracture networks. Many processes that have been used successfully in sandstone reservoirs may not be economically feasible in fractured reservoirs.
KESS2 PhD Scholarship: Research into Microbially Enhanced Mine Water Geothermal Energy
  Dr A Mitchell
Application Deadline: 18 August 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

Low enthalpy geothermal heat recovery and storage in abandoned flooded coal mines is an area of increasing interest as we move towards decarbonised heating and energy systems in both domestic and industrial settings.
Seismic history matching and machine learning, Edinburgh Time-Lapse Project
Research Group: Institute of Petroleum Engineering
Prof C MacBeth, Dr R Chassagne
Application Deadline: 1 October 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

The current oil and gas fields are now challenging to produce and the time for easy extraction is gone. More complex and accurate representations of the field with models are required to take any decision concerning field development.
Climate change influences on landsliding in the British Isles
Dr M Ibsen, Dr A P Dykes, Dr S Downward
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Climate change predictions for the British Isles generally indicate that there will be higher winter rainfall in future, but with more frequent high intensity rainfall events at any time of year.
Dinoflagellate cysts and palaeoenvironmental change during Cretaceous oceanic anoxic events: a study of OAE1a
Prof I Jarvis, Prof G Gillmore
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

This project will study Cretaceous dinoflagellate cysts. It seeks to understand relationships between dinocysts, a proxy for marine nutrient availability and organic zooplankton fertility, and episodes of black shale (petroleum source rock) deposition during Oceanic Anoxic Events (OAEs) in the mid-Cretaceous.
Flood mitigation schemes in rural communities in the south west of England
Dr K Clarke, Dr A P Dykes, Dr M Ibsen
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

There have been several severe flood events in southwest England in recent years, including Boscastle in 2004, Dawlish in 2014 and Coverack in 2014 and July 2017.
Improved understanding of the Vaiont landslide based on refined modelling using updated geological information
  Dr A P Dykes
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The Vaiont landslide occurred in 1963 in northern Italy and has perplexed researchers ever since. Recently, however, new geological information and interpretations have led to an entirely new framework for understanding the event.
PhD Studentship in Engineering - Sub-surface impacts of green infrastructure in cities
Dr B Thomas, Prof C Kilsby
