PhD in Medieval History

A PhD in Medieval History gives students the opportunity to study the rich and different period of the Medieval times. Seeking to understand the ideas, processes and events that shaped various peoples and continents, students will write up their findings in a unique dissertation.

What’s it like to do a PhD in Medieval History?

Throughout a Medieval History PhD, students will engage extensively with a variety of primary sources. Your resulting analysis should then be contextualised within the wider literature of your chosen field. Most PhD students of Medieval History will propose their own research project. There are a few advertised projects available each year but these are very limited. By the end of the degree you will have written up a 75,000 word thesis which is then assessed in an oral viva exam.

Throughout the degree there will be plenty of opportunities to develop you skills and engage with the wider academic community. Some common activities you may participate in include research trips, workshops, teaching undergraduates, presenting at conferences and publishing articles. Depending on your topic of study you may also have access to language courses.

Entry requirements

Most universities will ask that Medieval History applicants have a Masters degree in History or a related subject, such as Medieval Studies or Literature. Some universities may consider students without a postgraduate degree but they must be able to prove previous academic prowess and professional research experience.
