Dynamic Optimisation of Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems
Dr A Maheri, Dr S Sriramula
Applications accepted all year round
Multi-objective optimisation and multi-criteria assessment and decision making is an indivisible part of the design and planning of hybrid energy systems.
Enhancing the performance, condition, safety and reliability of offshore wind energy infrastructure systems using optimal design, inspections, structural health monitoring and structural control
Dr P Omenzetter, Dr P Dunning, Dr S Sriramula, Dr Amir Siddiq
Applications accepted all year round
Wind turbines are exposed to frequent structural damage increasing the cost of wind energy generation. To drive these costs down, this project will develop new automated methods for detection of structural damage to wind turbines by examining vibration responses measured by sensors attached to the structure.
Marine risers: experimental damage detection, monitoring and numerical modelling using digital twins
Dr P Omenzetter, Dr D Van der A, Prof E Pavlovskaia, Dr Amir Siddiq
Applications accepted all year round
Marine risers are critical components of any offshore oil and gas production operations linking subsea field developments with production and drilling equipment atop fixed or floating facilities.
EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Entertainment

Modelling and analysis of low carbon energy systems
Dr M Qadrdan, Prof N Jenkins
Application Deadline: 31 December 2018
We seek to recruit a highly motivated PhD student to conduct research relevant to modelling and analysis of low carbon energy systems.
Optimal expansion planning of integrated energy networks under uncertainty
  Dr M Qadrdan
Application Deadline: 31 December 2018
Project start date. January, April, July or October 2019 - Duration. 3.5 Year. The GB gas and electricity networks play crucial roles in delivering energy to end users.
Group activity and travel scheduling with shared autonomous vehicles - Project ID SEBE0023
Dr A Fonzone, Dr G Fountas
Application Deadline: 31 January 2019
Although we do not know yet what mobility patterns will look like with fully automated vehicles, what we do know is that the future will be different from the present.
The role of shared, connected and autonomous vehicles in urban emergency response for natural hazards. Project ID - SEBE0024
Dr G Fountas, Dr A Fonzone
Application Deadline: 31 January 2019
Recent examples of severe natural hazards across the globe (e.g., wildfires in California, US and Attica, Greece in 2018; hurricanes Irma, Harvey and Florence in 2017 and 2018; Indonesian earthquake and tsunami in 2018) have highlighted the role of effective emergency response systems towards mitigating societal and economic impact.
EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Intelligent Games and Game Intelligence (IGGI)
EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Intelligent Games and Game Intelligence (IGGI). Up to 12 fully-funded PhD studentships to start September 2019.
A realist investigation of co-design and development practices in complex systems environments - Ref: MKUF2018
  Dr M King
Applications accepted all year round
The 21st Century presents tough global/societal challenges. The Engineering Systems of Systems (SoS) research group aims to seek solutions to these challenges through the study and advancement of complex SoS engineering and the socio-technical systems that shape our world.
