Biogas upgrading by means of cyclic adsorption processes
  Dr C Fernandez-Martin, Dr D Dionisi
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Global warming is one of the most worldwide current challenges facing humanity, a direct consequence of the increasing CO2 emissions generated from the combustion of fossil fuels.
Beyond Making Thiazolines and Oxazolines: Expanding the Enzymatic Repertoire to incorporate other 5- and 6-membered heterocyclic rings in peptides
  Dr W Houssen, Dr S Dall'Angelo, Dr I Fotheringham
Application Deadline: 1 May 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Cyclic peptides have a great therapeutic potential with several examples reach the clinic e.g. gramicidin S (antibiotic), ziconotide (pain relief), somatostatin (anticancer) and cyclosporine (immunosuppressant) and many others are in the late stages of clinical trials e.g.
Development of Nano-Enabled Drug Carriers to Overcome Pan-Chemoresistance of Cancer Stem(-like) Cells
  Dr M Najlah
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The acquired resistance induced by repetitive exposure of cancer cells to anticancer drugs is one of the major limitations to successful chemotherapy.
Cooperative catalysts for the conversion of sustainable feedstocks
  Prof D Wass
Application Deadline: 31 August 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

This project is based in the Cardiff Catalysis Institute (CCI) and will explore new homogeneous catalysts in which multiple active sites work cooperatively to convert sustainable feedstocks into more valuable products.
Earth-Abundant First Row Transition Metal Catalysis for Diverse Alcohol Functionalization
  Dr L Morrill
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Dr Louis Morrill (https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/people/view/69691-morrill-louis) is looking for a PhD student to work on the research project “Earth-Abundant First Row Transition Metal Catalysis for Diverse Alcohol Functionalization”.
EPSRC DTP Hub – Sustainable Plastics

Funding Type

PhD Type

These studentships will be part of Cardiff University's interdisciplinary doctoral training hub in sustainable plastics. The manufacture, performance and end-of-life (recycling, environmental fate) of polymers (plastics) is an area of intense current interest and importance.
PhD in Chemistry: New applications of Frustrated Lewis Pairs in Organic Synthesis
  Dr R Melen
Application Deadline: 31 August 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

This PhD project will look at new reactions that can be performed using frustrated Lewis pairs. The student will develop skills in organic and inorganic synthesis.
PhD in Chemistry: Single or Double? A Radical Approach to Synthesis via Frustrated Lewis Pairs Through EPR Characterisation
Dr E Richards, Dr R Melen
Application Deadline: 31 July 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

This PhD project aims to characterise electron transfer processes that direct the chemical reactivity of Frustrated Lewis Pairs, opening the potential for divergent reactivities in organic synthesis and small molecule activation.
PhD in the computational design of organic materials
  Dr Kim Jelfs
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

A 36 month PhD position in computational chemistry is available within the research group of Dr.
EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Next Generation Synthesis & Reaction Technology (rEaCt) - 13 Studentship Projects Available

Funding Type

PhD Type

Applications are invited for 13 4-year MRes/Ph.D. EPSRC CDT rEaCt studentship projects – Cohort 2 (Intake October 2020). At least 13 studentships available - click here to view project summaries.
Development of low molecular weight organogelators
  Dr J Bear
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Low Molecular Weight Organogelators (LMWOs) are small molecules, which are able to gel organic species through intermolecular supra-assembly.[1-4] This property makes them very useful for oil spill remediation and clean-up, as you can apply the LMWO to floating oil slicks; gel the oil and scoop it out of the water.
Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy NMR for the Rapid Identification of Medicinal Plants
Dr JM Peron, Dr A Le Gresley
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy (DOSY) is a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique that is used to analyse mixtures.[1–3] Put simply, NMR signals that overlap in 1D NMR spectra are separated in 2D DOSY spectra according to molecular size and those that belong to the same component align as they are governed by the same diffusion coefficient.
Magnetic-polymer hydrogels for controlled drug release
Dr A Perera, Dr N Hill, Prof M Fielder
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

This dynamic, multidisciplinary project involves developing a facile technique to fabricate polymer hydrogels incorporated with Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for controlled drug delivery applications.
Synthesis and Anti-Cancer Evaluation of New Heterocyclic Quinones
Prof F Aldabbagh, Dr N Hill
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The group has published on small molecules with specificity towards hypoxic cells associated with solid tumours, reductase enzymes over-expressed in cancer, as well as, aziridines that induce hypersensitivity from Fanconi anaemia cells and those carrying mutations in the BRCA (Breast Cancer Susceptibility) genes.
Synthesis and Properties of Novel thermoresponsive polymers for water purification
Dr S Barton, Dr J Barker
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type
