Chemo-enzymatic Synthesis and Potential Applications of Novel Heterocyclic Alkaloids
Dr H Deng, Dr L Trembleau
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is rising to dangerously high levels in all parts of the world. In Europe alone, drug-resistant bacteria are estimated to cause 25,000 deaths annually and cost more than US$1.5 billion every year in healthcare expenses and productivity losses.
Developing an enzymatic toolbox to make complex modified peptides
Prof M Jaspars, Dr W Houssen, Dr L Trembleau
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The pharmaceutical industry has identified a major gap in its portfolio. On the one hand, they are excellent at discovering small molecules that act via a lock and key type mechanism.
Discovery of novel pharmaceuticals from marine and desert microorganisms
Prof M Jaspars, Dr R Ebel
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Microorganisms from extreme environments such as the deep seas, cold seas and hyper arid deserts have been shown to produce a range of complex natural products with high biological activity.
Genome mining of novel antimicrobial natural products from new bacterial strains

Global warming is one of the most worldwide current challenges facing humanity, a direct consequence of the increasing CO2 emissions generated from the combustion of fossil fuels.
PhD in Chemistry: Development of Innovative Printed Irreversible Electrochromic Systems for application in sustainable low-cost smart labels
  Prof D Bonifazi
Application Deadline: 31 October 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

The goal of the project is to identify and investigate electrochemically irreversible chemistries and develop tunable one-time activation electrochromic inks and systems and scale-up its production.
PhD in Chemistry: Organic synthesis and study of chromogenic polymeric materials based on polythiophenes responsive electrical stimuli
  Prof D Bonifazi

For hydrogen storage applications, Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have been tested due to their high porosity and large surface area (can be used to trap hydrogen molecules).
Discovery of Antibiotics from Cyanobacteria (TRUMANJ20DTP)
  Dr A Truman
Application Deadline: 25 November 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

Bacteria have the capacity to produce natural products with exquisite bioactivities, which makes these compounds excellent candidates as medicines and agrochemicals.
Development of low molecular weight organogelators
  Dr J Bear
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Low Molecular Weight Organogelators (LMWOs) are small molecules, which are able to gel organic species through intermolecular supra-assembly.[1-4] This property makes them very useful for oil spill remediation and clean-up, as you can apply the LMWO to floating oil slicks; gel the oil and scoop it out of the water.
Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy NMR for the Rapid Identification of Medicinal Plants
Dr JM Peron, Dr A Le Gresley
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy (DOSY) is a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique that is used to analyse mixtures.[1–3] Put simply, NMR signals that overlap in 1D NMR spectra are separated in 2D DOSY spectra according to molecular size and those that belong to the same component align as they are governed by the same diffusion coefficient.
