Volcanology PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships for UK Students in the UK

We have 26 Volcanology PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships for UK Students in the UK

Understanding anomalous glacier fluctuations

Summary. This field-based project will utilise geomorphology, tephrochronology and remote sensing to better understand how Icelandic glacier fluctuations can be decoupled from climate drivers. Read more

Magmas and volatiles in the southern Chilean volcanic arc

Project background. Arcs, magmas, and volatiles. Subduction zone magmatism is associated with some of our planet’s largest volcanic eruptions and plays a key role in cycling volatile elements between Earth’s solid interior and surface. Read more

Arctic climate variability and societal impacts 500-1500CE

Summary. The project will investigate the variability of the Greenland climate during the period 500-1500CE to better understand its role in driving societal change for the Dorset culture, Norse and Thule Inuit. Read more

Does mantle heterogeneity control the distribution of volcanic systems?

Background. The Earth's crust is unique in our Solar System. The young (180 Ma), dense oceanic crust has low elevation compared to the less dense and significantly older (2–4 Ga) continental crust. Read more

Petrogenesis of lunar mare basalts from the nearside eastern limb of the moon

Project overview. The Moon preserves a record of volcanism on a small rocky terrestrial planet. Lunar lavas were mainly erupted between ~4.35 and 3 billion years ago, with some areas of the Moon being volcanically active as recently as 2 billion years ago. Read more

Common origin or domino effect? Deformation and seismicity at Western Galápagos Volcanoes

Lead supervisor. Susanna Ebmeier (Leeds). Co-supervisors. Andrew Bell (Edinburgh), Davis Ferguson (Leeds). This project will use satellite radar measurements of displacement at the millimetre scale to explore recently proposed deep connections between the volcanoes of the Western Galápagos. Read more

Impacts of volcanically induced climate change on medieval Icelandic farm abandonment

Summary. This interdisciplinary project uses down-scaled climate predictions to explore Medieval Icelandic farm settlement and abandonment patterns and possible links to global volcanic-induced climate change. Read more

Translating magma intrusion into volcano surface deformation

Full details of this project and the NERC Panorama DTP funding scheme can be found here. Academic Supervisors. Dr Craig Magee <c.magee@leeds.ac.uk> (Institute of Geophysics and Tectonics, School of Earth & Environment, University of Leeds). Read more
