Biology, Psychology and Chemistry in the new millennium are set to continue the explosive progress begun last century. Biologists, Psychologists and chemists are collaborating to take imaginative routes to solving problems by sharing techniques and experimental approaches between physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, molecular, cell and developmental biology, neurobiology, immunology, ecology, environmental biology and psychology.
The School of Biological and Chemical Sciences reflects this new era with active research in all of these areas and provides a dynamic, interactive and friendly environment for the training both of research students and post-doctoral scientists. We benefit from many collaborations, both within and beyond the School, that provide additional insight and expertise.
The School's research activities are considerably enriched by its extensive leading-edge facilities. These include equipment for biological imaging (including confocal microscopy and a state-of-the-art photon counting system for high sensitivity fluorescence/bio-luminescence imaging in living tissue and cells); purification and analysis of macromolecules; spectroscopic studies including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and circular dichroism (CD); X-ray crystallography; recombinant DNA technology; light and EM microscopy; glasshouses; controlled environment rooms; marine and freshwater aquaria; high level computing facilities.
The new College Genome Centre provides further specialist resources for genomics and bioinformatics.
