EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Delivering Quantum Technologies

EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Delivering Quantum Technologies

4-year PhD programme in quantum technology and quantum systems engineering

  • Quantum technologies involve control and manipulation of quantum states to achieve results not possible with classical matter, transforming measurement, communication and computation. UCL's CDT in Delivering Quantum Technologies was launched in 2014 to train the next generation of leaders in Quantum Technologies research.
  • We equip students to function in a complex research and engineering landscape where quantum physics meets cryptography, complexity and information theory, devices, materials, software and hardware engineering
  • We welcome applicants from a broad range of degree backgrounds, including physics, engineering and computer science and have partnered with over 20 companies and institutes to deliver the CDT. Our partners include companies and institutes developing quantum computing, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum cryptography technologies

Training and research in the centre

  • Students benefit from a broad training year in a cohort of 10-12 students leading to an MRes, covering all the disciplines underlying quantum technologies, followed by three years of research, leading to the award of a PhD.
  • Students will propose their own research projects with potential supervisors. There is a pool of around forty potential supervisors at UCL, with additional supervisors in the partner laboratories.
  • You do not need to choose a supervisor when you apply; you will benefit from a year's advanced training in the field, plus a chance to learn about the research groups and see them in action, before you decide. You also get to be part of a cohort of like-minded friends and colleagues through your training.

How to Apply

  • We will be looking for candidates with an outstanding academic record (first-class or upper-second class honours in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related subject at UK undergraduate Masters level or equivalent) coupled with a broad outlook and a strong interest in quantum technologies.
  • Application is via the UCLQ website. You will need a CV, transcript of your undergraduate marks, names and contact details of at least two academic referees, and a personal statement giving your reasons for applying and an outline of your research interests.
  • Applications for 2023 entry are now open.
You must apply by this route even if you are also applying for other postgraduate programmes at UCL.

Avaliable Studentships

A fully funded PhD studentship is being offered by both University College London (UCL) and The National Physical Laboratory (NPL). This studentship is a unique opportunity offered through our CDT programme, where students have the privilege of choosing their research project upon enrolment. The programme also includes a four-year fully funded studentship that covers fees, stipend, and an extensive training and research support package. Furthermore, the first year of the programme includes an innovative MRes in Quantum Technologies, and in years 2-4, the student will work on their PhD in collaboration with a world-class commercial partner. This opportunity is not to be missed, and interested individuals should apply by 16th June 2023 at 17:00 UK Time. You can find out more information and apply here
