CDT in Sustainable Chemistry

Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates for a fully funded 4-year PhD studentship in the area of Sustainable Chemistry.

We are looking to recruit students interested in a wide range of research areas within the fields of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biosciences and Synthetic Biology to the following thematic research areas:

  • Synthesis (efficient and safer routes to pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and polymers)
  • Catalysis (metal, organic and enzymatic catalysis, high rates and selectivities)
  • Energy (batteries, fuel cells, organic photovoltaic and thermoelectric materials)
  • Fundamentals (kinetics and mechanisms, spectroscopy and modelling)
  • Manufacturing (additives and 3D printing, life-cycle analysis, cyclic manufacture)
  • Computational (data extraction, machine learning, maths in medicine)
  • Process engineering (reactor design, Supercritical fluids, microwave processing)
  • Food Science (biopolymers, polysaccharides, genomic analysis)
  • Biotechnology (biovalorisation, synthetic biology, platform chemicals)

Benefits

  • A comprehensive student-centred professional skills training programme
  • Integral involvement of industry and other relevant organisations in training and research
  • Access to our world-class experts and research facilities
  • Opportunity to design and develop own research project
  • Competitive stipend, consumables and conference budget
  • Fully funded external placement
  • Being a part of a multidisciplinary cohort of students

Entry requirements

Ideally, candidates should hold one of the following:

  • A minimum of an upper second class honours degree from a 4-year undergraduate course in the field of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biosciences, Natural Sciences, Biotechnology or Pharmacy
  • A 3-year undergraduate course in one of the above disciplines plus a Masters degree and/or one year experience in industry.
