Centre for Doctoral Training in Cloud Computing for Big Data

Centre for Doctoral Training in Cloud Computing for Big Data

Data science is an exciting, inter-disciplinary field with huge opportunities for researchers to make an impact. Almost every area of science, engineering and commerce is driven by data, so wherever your interests lie, you can make a difference through data.

We offer our students the opportunity to become leaders of the future by developing deep technical expertise and applying their knowledge to important problems in areas they are passionate about. Our current students are working in a wide range of areas including data science for green energy, next-generation healthcare, graph databases and marine conservation.

The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Cloud Computing was first established in 2014, and since then it has recruited seven excellent cohorts of students. Our graduates have gone on to exciting careers in industry, academia, and the National Innovation Centre for Data. The CDT is supported by investment from its industrial partners, and by Newcastle University.

Through our partnerships with external organisations and researchers across Newcastle University, we identify real world challenges, enabling us to offer a wide range of exciting PhD topics for students to choose from. We also offer opportunities for our students to take paid industrial placements.

Our cohort based, 3.5-year scheme offers a tailored PhD training and research programme, with opportunities to:

  • Be part of a vibrant and supportive research environment
  • Collaborate directly with industry through the National Innovation Centre for Data
  • Be mentored by internationally recognised research leaders
  • Be part of a national network of experts through our partnership with the Alan Turing Institute
  • Make an impact on industry, the economy, and society through your research

We combine knowledge from Computing Science and Mathematics and Statistics to offer a unique student experience. Based within the award-winning Urban Sciences Building, we are uniquely placed to give you access to an advanced skillset and prepare you for leadership in a rapidly developing field.
