Hector Fellow Academy PhD program

Join the interdisciplinary network of top-level scientists and realize your own PhD project within the discipline of one of the Hector Fellows. Outstanding young scientists from all over the world are invited to apply for the fully-funded PhD positions.

The Hector Fellow Academy (HFA) is a community of excellent academics – the Hector Fellows – who have been recognized by the Hector Foundation for their merit in research and teaching within natural sciences, informatics, mathematics, medicine / psychology and engineering. They work at different research institutions across Germany.

PhD students of the HFA get the opportunity to carry out a self-developed research project under supervision of one of the Hector Fellows. Thereby, they benefit from the expertise and the research network of their renowned mentor.

HFA PhD students are employed as research assistants at the university of the supervising Hector Fellow for three years. The salary is determined by the institute’s guidelines (according to the general pay scale of German universities approx. 47,000 EUR gross income per year). In addition, the PhD students receive grants for research expenses for their project (15,000 EUR per year) and are given the opportunity to gain interdisciplinary expertise and relevant soft skills by participating in selected training activities.

Admission requirements:

  • Preparation of an innovative self-developed research proposal for a relevant scientific issue in one of the Hector Fellows’ research fields
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) with excellent performance
  • Very good English skills
  • Readiness to move to the location of the supervising Hector Fellow’s university
  • In addition, the master thesis may not have been supervised by the selected Hector Fellow.
