Architecture, Built Environment and Planning research activities cover a wide range of research areas, including renewable energy technologies, sustainable design, net-zero carbon building, fire safety of buildings and materials, the safety of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, the resilience of infrastructure, urban regeneration, housing and real estate, digital construction, construction materials and highway engineering delivered through six Research Centres:

• the Centre for Sustainable Technologies (CST)
• the Fire Safety Engineering Research and Technology Centre (FireSERT)
• the Hydrogen Safety Engineering and Research Centre (HySAFER)
• the Centre for Research on Property and Planning (RPP)
• the Studies Allied to the Built Environment Research Centre (SABER)
• the Architecture Research Group (ARG)

Computer Science and Informatics research explores advancements in intelligent systems, neurotechnology, computational neuroscience, machine learning, augmented hybrid intelligence, semantic analytics, smart human-machine systems and digital health through four Research Centres:

• the Intelligent Systems Research Centre (ISRC)
• the Cognitive Analytics Research Lab (CARL)
• the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (AIRC)
• the Pervasive Computing Research Centre (PCRC)

Engineering research focuses on both applied and theoretical research across several themes that encompass topics that include nanotechnology, clean technology, biomaterial and tissue engineering, engineering composites, advanced manufacturing and digital health technologies. This research is underpinned by a significant portfolio of funded projects and conducted in two main centres:

• the Nanotechnology and Integrated BioEngineering Centre (NIBEC) and
• the Centre for Advanced Future Materials and Manufacturing (AFMM).

The University’s annual PhD Scholarship Competition offers over 100 exciting full-time funded PhD scholarship opportunities across all subject areas, including those within the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment (CEBE).

Scholarships will cover fees for three years, an annual non-taxable maintenance grant of approx. £15,600 and a Research Training and Support Grant worth £900 per year.

The deadline for applications and all supplemental documents for PhDs in Computing, Intelligent Systems and Engineering is 4.00pm on 7 February 2022.

The deadline for applications and all supplemental documents for PhDs in Architecture, Built Environment and Planning is 4.00pm on 28 February 2022.

Applicants should hold (or expect to hold) a first or upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent). Candidates from the UK, EU and overseas are eligible to apply. Please see project descriptions for further details on eligibility.

Applications will be considered on the basis of candidates’ qualifications, skills, experience and research interests.

You do not need to make a separate application for a scholarship. However, please indicate on your application for admission that you are not a self-funded/private sponsor research applicant.
