16 Fully-funded PhD Studentships with Industrial Top-up

EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Innovative Metal Processing (IMPaCT)

About: IMPaCT was created to train future leaders who are able to fully exploit and deploy innovative metal processing techniques in industry. It brings together world-class metals research teams from the universities of Leicester, Birmingham and Nottingham along with 14 industrial and international partners. The Centre has secured significant financial support from EPSRC, the universities and our industrial partners including Alstom Power, Doncasters Group, Rolls-Royce, STFC, Tata Steel, TWI and Welding Alloys.

Core Research Topics:

  • Casting - Including single-crystal/investment casting of superalloys for aerospace and power generation applications
  • Welding - Including novel dissimilar welding & joining techniques for gas and oil transportation systems
  • Surface Engineering - Including advanced functional coating, surface modifications for turbine applications
  • Near Net-Shape Forming - including laser assisted metal forming, novel hot isostatic pressing
  • Synthesis of Nanomaterials - Including synthesis of nanoparticles for advanced materials and coatings
  • Characterisation & Performance Evaluation - Including evaluation of power generation and aerospace materials and structures
  • Modelling of Metal Processing - Including multi-scale multi-physics modelling of 3D printing, casting, welding
Deadline for application: 30th June 2015

The Programme: IMPaCT is a 4 year integrated doctoral training programme. Within the 1st year there is a range of training including taught modules, technical and transferable skill training. In the following 3 years the student will undertake a research project within metal processing in line with one of the CDTs core themes. There also the opportunity to engage with our industrial partners and sponsors and students are encouraged to carry on their skills and career training throughout the 4 years.

Funding: The funding available for IMPaCT students includes the following:

  • Minimum Annual Stipend of £ 14,777 (Tax Free)
  • Annual UK/EU Fees
  • Potential of an Industrial Enhanced Top-up of up to £4,000
  • Generous Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) to cover travel, conferences etc.

There is also limited number of places for exceptional international students however conditions do apply.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants must hold a UK undergraduate (Bachelors) degree with at least 2:1 or an equivalent qualification from a recognised overseas institution.

The CDT welcomes applications from varies backgrounds including Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Bioengineering and other various backgrounds.
