Wellcome Trust Four Year PhD Programme The University of Manchester Quantitative and Biophysical Biology

Wellcome Trust 4-year PhD Programme
in Quantitative and Biophysical Biology

Have you trained in physics, engineering, mathematics or computer science?

Would you like to use your skills to tackle fascinating and important problems in biology?

If yes, then the Wellcome Trust PhD Programme in Quantitative and Biophysical Biology may be for you! We will provide you with the training needed to use and develop your theoretical skills to address fundamental questions that underpin human development, ageing and disease. New approaches in biomedical research are increasingly reliant on statistical and mathematical modelling, as well as biophysics and bioinformatics. At the end of the QBB programme you can expect to be an interdisciplinary scientist, ready to tackle some of the new challenges in the biomedical sciences of the 21st Century.

We are now seeking 6 outstanding research students to join our Wellcome Trust-funded Four Year PhD Programme, for entry in September 2018. We also have two remaining places to start in January 2018. These are only open to UK/EU students. As well as fulfilling the eligibility criteria, we are looking for individuals who are motivated, ambitious, communicative, forward looking and who will contribute to our interdisciplinary environment. We offer an excellent intellectual and scientific environment and a choice of well-funded research laboratories. Our team of supervisors is drawn from world-leading academics in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of the Biology, Medicine and Health. You will be co-supervised by an experimentalist and a theoretician and we will assist you in finding your own balance of experimental and theoretical work.

The first year of the Wellcome Trust PhD Programme involves two short research projects and skills workshops to help you to develop your mathematical and laboratory skills in the context of biological research problems. You will then be ready to select your PhD research topic for the remaining three years.

The Wellcome Trust is the United Kingdom’s largest biomedical research charity that aims to achieve extraordinary improvements in health by supporting the brightest minds. The Wellcome Trust supports the public understanding of science. Studentships cover tuition fees and generous stipend (starting at approximately £20k per year).
