4-year MRC DTP Programme in Quantitative and Interdisciplinary Approaches to Biomedical Science

The University of Dundee is running an exciting and challenging 4-year MRC DTP Programme in Quantitative and Interdisciplinary approaches to biomedical science. This PhD programme brings together leading experts from the School of Life Sciences (SLS), the School of Medicine (SoM) and the School of Science and Engineering (SSE) to train the next generation of scientists at the forefront of international science. The outstanding biomedical research at the University of Dundee was recognised by its very high rankings in REF 2014, with Dundee rated as the top University for Biological Sciences in the UK.

A wide range of projects are available within this programme crossing exceptional strengths in four key areas:

  • Infection and Disease
  • Responses to Cellular Stresses
  • Development, Stem Cells and Neurobiology
  • Big Data and Translation.

All students on this programme will receive training in computational biology, mathematical biology and statistics to equip with the necessary skills to tackle complex biological questions. The programme is structured such that students carry out 3 rotations projects (in 3 out of the 4 research themes above) alongside specialised in-course training in the 1st year, prior to selection of the final PhD project in years 2-4. Participation in these rotation projects provides experience of complimentary experimental techniques that enable new interdisciplinary approaches to be taken. Additional benefits of this programme include; participation in University-wide MRC student Summer Schools and access to additional supplementary funds to support specialised training. Students will also benefit from training by and interaction with the world-renowned MRC PPU unit. Up to 6 studentships will be available with a start date of September 2017 and will cover stipend, fees, training and travel budget.
