PhD Studentships in Economic Measurement: Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence (ESCoE)

We are seeking to recruit two to three PhD students who are interested in economic statistics and measurement. The students will contribute to King’s College London’s partnership with the ONS funded Economics Statistics Centre of Excellence (ESCoE). ESCoE is a joint initiative between the National Institute of Economic and Social Research who hosts the Centre, Cambridge, King’s College London, Nesta, Strathclyde and Warwick Business School.

One or two studentships will be concerned with investigating the implications of digitalisation for measuring economic activity, involving exploring new data sources and possible business case studies/structured interviews; and/or the measurement of firms’ investments in intangible assets using linked business microdata, Project 2.2: Measurement issues in the Modern Economy (see details below). The successful candidate’s main supervisors will be Professor Mary O’Mahony and Professor Diane Coyle (University of Manchester). One studentship will be concerned with aspects of labour market measurement, in particular the prospects for using administrative and big data to develop new labour market statistics, Project 3.1: Using administrative data to develop new labour force & migration statistics and Project 3.2: Using administrative and big data to improve labour market statistics (see details below). The successful candidate’s main supervisors will be Dr Augustin DeCoulon (Business School) and Professor Jonathan Portes (Department of Political Economy).

The students will also work with individuals in other ESCoE partner institutes such as Hasan Bakhshi (Nesta), Rebecca Riley (NIESR) and Jonathan Haskel (Imperial) on the modern economy and Jonathan Wadsworth (Royal Holloway), Peter Dolton (NIESR and Sussex), Richard Dorsett (NIESR) and Stefan Speckesser (NIESR) on labour market statistics. The research will contribute to and complement various ESCoE funded projects in addition to those mentioned above; details of the work programme are available here.

Candidates should have a quantitative Masters degree in Economics or related areas (normally with Distinction) from an internationally recognised academic institution; and be interested in developing their research interests in economics statistics and applied econometrics.
