Cardiff University: PhD in Applied Linguistics

PhD in Applied Linguistics

The School of English, Communication and Philosophy and School of Computer Sciences invite applications to the following fully-funded PhD studentship for the 2016/17 academic year.

The studentship will commence on October 2016

Studentship available: PhD in Applied Linguistics, Corpus Linguistics, Computational Linguistics or Natural Language Processing (Welsh language desirable)

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship as part of an inter-disciplinary and multi-institutional project that is creating a large-scale, open-source corpus of contemporary Welsh language (CorCenCC). The project aims to redefine the scope, design and infrastructure of corpus development methodology, and to create a major Welsh language resource for use in community, commercial, educational and governmental settings.

The successful applicant will be working with teams of computer scientists and applied linguists. Excellent communication skills and the ability to meet deadlines are essential, and knowledge of Welsh is desirable. The post holder will work with a team of computing experts who are focusing on constructing a tagset, crowdsourcing application, digital pedagogic toolkit and digital corpus infrastructure. Relevant technical expertise is essential, and experience of quantitative and computational data analysis using concordancing software will be advantageous.

The specific topic to be researched by the successful candidate will be negotiated once they are in post.

Project Brief:

The design and construction of linguistic analysis and semantic coding tools. The thesis will focus on design, building and testing of a digital infrastructure that has the flexibility to support the analysis of linguistic datasets from numerous language varieties.

This student will be part of the CorCenCC team, contributing to developments on the project. The specific topic to be researched by the successful candidate will be negotiated once they are in post.
