Under the guidance of world-renowned scholars engaged in path-breaking research and praxis, the Doctoral Program in Social and Political Thought is a doctoral program for people who believe that the world can and should be different.

Altogether distinctive in the Australian context, the program is a four-year program that begins with an intense year of coursework and training, combining serious theoretical and conceptual work with a strong commitment to engaging with the enormous challenges of our era.

The demanding and rigorous year of coursework, comprised of four North American style doctoral seminars, provides students with a deeper understanding of the great debates in social and political thought, and better prepares them for the task of undertaking original investigations of their own.

There are a number of full scholarships available to highly qualified applicants on a competitive basis.

Institute for Social Justice

The Institute for Social Justice is a creative space for thinking about and responding to the challenges we face in the 21st Century.

New insights, intellectual excitement and alternative pathways for action emerge when we question what we have taken for granted.

Our research activities combine original normative reflection with diverse forms of action research. We aim to expand our horizons of understanding and disclose new possibilities for living together in the challenging conditions of our era.

The Institute is developing innovative cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research programs that will experimentally combine original scholarship and normative reflection with diverse forms of action research.

This complex and multi-faceted endeavour requires rethinking our highest social ideals: justice, equality, freedom, democracy, public goods, and the very meaning of our humanity. It also requires concretely addressing urgent social issues, seeking practical and workable solutions through productive partnerships with academic colleagues locally and internationally, and through engagement with community and civil society organisations.
