4-year Wellcome Ph.D. Programme in Cellular and Molecular Physiology

The Physiological Laboratory in Liverpool is widely recognised as an international centre of excellence for research in cell biology, biochemistry and physiology. The Liverpool 4-year Ph.D. Programme was the first to be funded by the Wellcome Trust and has been running since 1994. Two fully funded places are available on this Ph.D. programme. The successful candidates will start their Ph.D. training at the end of September 2019.

Structure of the course

During the first year students are registered for an MRES and experience three 10-week rotations in the laboratories of different Wellcome Faculty members. The rotation projects are supplemented by workshops and lectures covering research topics and techniques relevant to biomedical scientists. In the summer of Year 1 students select a laboratory for their Ph.D. and join this research group for Years 2-4. Throughout the Ph.D., students have access to a wide range of support and training options to facilitate progress in their Ph.D. research.

Past students

~100 students have successfully graduated from our Ph.D. Programme since it was first established. ~70% of graduates remain in directly related science-based careers 6 years post-graduation. 20% of all graduates have achieved independent principal investigator status in academia or industry with many others securing influential positions in a wide range of science-related careers.

Eligibility and funding

Eligibility: Applicants must have (or be predicted to obtain) the equivalent of a first or upper second class degree in a relevant subject. Applications from interdisciplinary students with relevant translatable knowledge or expertise are also encouraged. Applicants from the UK and all EU and non-EU countries are all eligible. We encourage applications from overseas students, ~40% of our student intake has come from the EU/Rest of the World and university course fees are fully covered for all students.

Funding: The students are funded by The Wellcome Trust who will provide four year Prize Studentships (currently starting at £19,919 per annum, tax free), course fees, generous travel and training funds and substantial research funds.

Your application should include a cover letter outlining your reasons for applying and a CV that includes details on your current qualifications (including actual/predicted grades) and descriptions of your research experience. You must include the details of at least two referees that can be contacted for a reference. Ideally, they will be academic/industry lab heads that have direct experience of your research capabilities. To assist with shortlisting we will be contacting the referees of all applicants; please ensure that your chosen referees are likely to respond by the shortlisting deadline.

Candidates are shortlisted in mid May for interview in late May early June. Expenses for travel and accommodation (if required) are covered for all UK/EU-based applicants shortlisted for interview.
