Adapting to the Challenges of a Changing Environment ACCE DTP

Adapting to the Challenges of a Changing Environment ACCE DTP

Partners: Universities of Liverpool, Sheffield and York,
Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and Natural History Museum

This NERC funded Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) brings together the best in environmental, ecological and evolutionary research across the Universities of Sheffield, Liverpool, York, the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, and the Natural History Museum.

The ACCE DTP PhD program offers projects aligned with the grand challenges in environmental research under four foci:

  1. Securing ecosystems and their natural capital
  2. Predicting and mitigating impacts of environmental change
  3. Understanding the dynamics of biodiversity
  4. Investigating mechanisms of evolutionary change: genes to communities

For further information, including details on how to apply, visit the ACCE DTP website.

Funding

The studentships are fully funded for 3.5 years. The studentships cover: (i) an annual tax-free stipend at the standard Research Council rate (at least £14,577 for 2018-2019, to be confirmed for 2019-2020), (ii) research costs, and (iii) tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. Studentships can be extended for another six months on a case-by-case basis: for example, three months extra funding is guaranteed if students opt to take a 3-month placement during their PhD.

Key dates

  • Application deadline – 9 January 2019
  • Interviews w/c 11th February 2019
  • NERC Universal acceptance date 20 March 2019

Eligibility

The ACCE DTP studentships are available to UK and EU students who meet the UK residency requirements. EU nationals who do not meet the residency requirements may still be eligible for ‘a fees-only award’ which covers the tuition fees at RCUK level and Research Training Support Grant (RTSG), but not stipend. Further information about eligibility you can find in RCUK Training Grant Guide.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to be predicted or have achieved a first-class or strong upper second-class undergraduate degree (or equivalent international qualifications). The interdisciplinary nature of this programme means that we welcome applications from students with backgrounds in any relevant subject that provides the necessary skills, knowledge and experience for the DTP, including environmental, biological, chemical, mathematical, physical and social sciences.

In addition, each Institute welcomes applications from students with their project proposals. Applicants intending to take this route should speak to a suitable supervisor within the ACCE partnership first. The PhD projects described in these applications should clearly be the idea and vision of the applicant, and not of the supervisor.

Closing date for applications: Monday 9 January 2019
