Digital Creativity Labs PhD Studentships

Digital Creativity Labs PhD Studentships

The Digital Creativity Labs invite applications for fully funded PhD studentships in digital creativity at the University of York.

We are looking for applicants that

  • want to do cutting-edge research and practice in digital creativity,
  • are comfortable and eager to cross disciplinary boundaries,
  • have the creative and/or technical skills to create digital media with colleagues and industry (or the desire to acquire them),
  • want their work to have an impact in the world.

The Digital Creativity Labs are a world centre of excellence for impact-driven research, focusing on digital games, interactive media and the rich space where they converge. With the main site in York and spoke sites at Cass Business School, Goldsmiths, and Falmouth University, the hub is a major (£18 million) investment by three UK research councils, four universities, and over 100 partner organisations across digital games, media, heritage, museums, galleries, education, healthcare and analytics. See digitalcreativity.ac.uk for more details.

We are particularly interested in applicants in the following areas:

  • Game analytics
  • Creative AI for games and interactive media
  • Interactive data visualization and explorable explanations
  • Playful, gameful, and motivational design
  • Adaptive and context-aware media experiences, particularly for Social TV
  • Mixed-initiative creative interfaces and other digital approaches to craft practice and access to creative expression amongst people with disabilities
  • Digital heritage

Exceptional candidates in other areas of digital creativity are also welcome. Depending on topic and supervisor, degrees can be conferred in computer science or theatre, film, television, and interactive media.

A studentship includes:

  • supervision and training by two researchers at the labs
  • a stipend that covers tuition and living allowance for 3.5 years
  • collaboration opportunities with some of our 50+ world-leading researchers and dozens of PhD students at the hub universities
  • the possibility of working with some of our 100+ industry and social institutions such as Sony, BBC, BT, Codemasters, IBM, Philips, Science Museum, Supermassive, or the Imaginarium

Application requirements are outstanding academic ability and fluency in the English language. Eligibility for the full stipend (tuition and living allowance) normally requires the applicant to be settled and ordinarily resident in the UK for three years prior to the grant, and EU citizenship and residency for a fee-only stipend. See digitalcreativity.ac.uk/phd-opportunities for full details.

To be considered for a studentship, apply no later than 23:59 GMT on Friday, February 24, 2017.
