Graduate Teaching Assistant: Studentship Scheme Information

The three-year Graduate Teaching Assistant Studentship scheme is designed to help the Department of Education Childhood and Inclusion within Sheffield Institute of Education develop academics for the future. With a focus on excellence in research and support to develop skills in teaching within Higher Education, it offers a brilliant opportunity to develop an academic career.

You will successfully complete a doctoral research programme within one of the departmental areas Education, Early Childhood or Childhood focusing on an issue related to Inclusion.

Alongside this you will contribute to the delivery of our taught programmes within Education, Early Childhood and Childhood through tutorials, seminars and other work with students.

You will also be supported to become an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy ensuring you establish expertise in pedagogy in Higher Education. The core elements of the scheme are:

  • £14,553 bursary
  • A fully funded PhD programme
  • Leadership and support from your teaching and learning mentor to apply for Associate Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy
  • A programme of structured induction and ongoing personal development
  • Regular appraisals to review learning, development and performance
  • Attendance at relevant academic conferences

Research

We are looking for two Graduate Teaching Assistants to undertake research in the field of Education and Inclusion. The research proposals will have to address inclusion issues in relation to Education, Early Childhood or Childhood, any proposal addressing these areas will be considered, projects addressing the topics noted below will be viewed favourably.

  • Addressing the BME attainment gap in Higher Education
  • Developing Inclusive Higher Education Pedagogies
  • Inclusive assessment strategies in Higher Education
  • Children and young people's rights/identity
  • Children and young people's well-being and education
  • Gender and childhood
Graduate Teaching Assistant Studentship Scheme

Funding and fee agreement

Due to the high investment we are making in the funding of this scheme, you will be asked to sign a fee and funding refund agreement which will apply if you fail to successfully complete the scheme.

Non UK/EU nationals

Suitable candidates from outside the UK/EU may apply but non UK/EU students must fund the difference between the International and UK/EU fee. If English is not your first language you will be required to have a British Council International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) overall band 7 with a minimum score of 7 in all skill areas. (please see section 4 of the application form for full details).
