Professional Doctorates – apply now for 2024 entry

UEA is currently offering a number of funded and self-funded Professional Doctorates, enabling working professionals to undertake original research related to their field, and advance current practice and theory.

We are one of the UK’s leading research institutions, Top 20 for research quality in the UK (Times Higher Education Rankings for the REF 2021). 91% of our research has been rated ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ by the Research Excellence Framework (REF2021).

At UEA, our postgraduate researchers are part of a large, supportive research community. We are part of the Norwich Research Park, where many clinicians, scientists and entrepreneurs are researching in some of the world’s leading research areas. The following Professional Doctorates are now open for application:

Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (ClinPsyD)

Blending academic, research and clinical practice, successful completion of the three-year ClinPsyD programme gives eligibility to apply for registration as a Clinical Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and gives eligibility for membership of the British Psychological Society as a Chartered Psychologist.

Doctorate in Educational Psychology (EdPsyD)

Based in the School of Education and Lifelong Learning, the EdPsyD programme is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Upon successful completion of this three-year, full-time programme, trainees are eligible to apply for HCPC registration and, upon admittance to the Register, practise as an Educational Psychologist. Trainees will also be eligible to apply for Chartered Membership of the BPS.

Doctor of Medicine (MD)

Based in the School of Medicine, successful completion of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) two years, full-time or four years, part-time postgraduate research degree will enable you to complete a doctoral level research degree.

The revised full-time degree programme has been aligned more effectively with the three-year timeframe available to you as a clinician during your training, to conduct 'out of programme' research. This provides candidates with a structure that supports and facilitates completion of the research project and the writing of the doctoral thesis for examination within this timeframe.

Professional Doctorate in Health and Social Care (ProfD HaSC)

The ProfD HaSC is an interdisciplinary, postgraduate level research programme that has been designed to meet the needs of senior health and social care practitioners who wish to develop and lead evidence-based interventions within their own sphere of practice.

The applied nature of the programme develops candidates’ research capability and enables them to manage complex problems and advance their practice. The programme fosters pioneering professional development relevant to the needs of the individual’s professional working situation.

NB: This programme has a start date every other year. The next start date will be October 2025 and will run subject to sufficient interest and applications to make a cohort educationally viable.

Doctorate in Education (EdD)

This five-year part-time programme is designed to meet the needs of professionals working in areas related to education, training and development who wish to draw on their everyday practice towards gaining a doctorate. The Doctorate of Education (EdD) programme recruits every two years and the 14^th cohort started in October 2022. The next start date will be in October 2024.

The idea of the Professional Doctorate is to give you the key theory, knowledge and qualifications to take back to your professional setting, helping you reach logical and thought-through conclusions on some of the toughest decisions faced in professional situations.

Each of these Professional Doctorates will give you the same status and qualification as a PhD, as well as similar experiences and challenges. All Professional Doctorates have their own course structure; however, each programme has a mix of learning styles, giving you the support and freedom to make the most of your study.
