World class engineering research

Institute of Materials and Manufacturing at Brunel aims to improve the performance of materials and structures, including their design, manufacturing, integrity and use. Research involves the integration of all the aspects of structures and materials research, including modelling and characterisation, design, manufacturing; and exploitation.

Areas of research excellence in engineering

• Aerospace Engineering

  Investigate fundamental and complex problems relating to aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, flight physics and performance, helicopter rotor dynamics and structural mechanics together with Computational Fluid Dynamics and Finite Elements Analysis code development and application.

• Civil Engineering

  Push the boundaries and deliver the next generation of roads, bridges, tunnels, coastal and flood protection, waste recycling, sustainable building construction and seamless construction management.

• Electronic and Electrical Engineering

  Research electronic, computer and multimedia engineering on the doorstep of much of the country’s information engineering industry.

• Mechanical, Energy, Automotive and Motorsport Engineering

  Design and develop of every kind of machine - from supersonic fighter jets and super cars to bicycles to toasters. Automotive Engineering is one of Brunel’s most active areas for research with one of the largest, most active engine research groups in the UK, focusing on experimental and modelling aspects of engine research to minimise pollutant emissions and improve fuel efficiency.

PhD with TWI in National Structural Integrity Research Centre, Cambridge

Brunel University London has partnered with the National Structural Integrity Research Centre in Cambridge to provide an opportunity for students to undertake in-depth research in combination with the industrial experience of TWI across the varied disciplines essential to structural integrity.

Specialist state of the art facilities and equipment

Our engineering research facilities are extensive, modern and well-equipped, including a national scale-up facility with over £100ml of industry and government funding to bridge the gap between research and full-scale industrial trials; dedicated aerospace/aviation labs; flight simulator; Automotive Habitat Lab; Brunel motorsport workshop; and state-of-art IC engine laboratories just to name a few. Students doing research in structural integrity also have access to some of the world's most advanced analysis and testing technologies in the Cambridge location housing over £20 million of state-of-the-art equipment.

Funding opportunities
