PhD candidate applications are sought to a number of disciplines within the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Sunderland. Applicants should be self-funded and ideally wish to study full-time.

Part-time study and applications for an MPhil will also be considered.

The University has a track record of working closely with postgraduate students to develop their research interests and was ranked 2nd nationally in overall student satisfaction in the 2018 postgraduate research student experience survey.

The School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing, has benefited from multi-million pound investment over the last five years in both working environment and infrastructure. As part of these activities, the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has invested heavily in state-of-the-art core facilities and equipment to support teaching and research activity.

We can provide an excellent research environment within a vibrant setting, with supervision and mentoring from leading academics. In addition, you will have opportunities to develop your research with established partners in academia, the pharmaceutical industry and allied healthcare related sectors.

Currently we have a number of multi-disciplinary PhD research areas within and including:

  • Cell Biology
    • Translational cancer research and microbiological analysis
  • Medicinal Chemistry
    • Design, synthesis and evaluation of novel compounds for therapeutic exploitation
  • Analytical Chemistry
    • Development and application of advanced analytical methodologies in disease diagnosis and complex separations
  • Pharmaceutics and Cosmetic Sciences
    • Development of novel formulations for enhanced and/or targeted drug delivery
  • Pharmacy Practice
    • Ealuation and analysis of healthcare models and legislation

Prior to application, each candidate should contact a potential supervisor to discuss their research interest and create a research proposal.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement for a postgraduate research degree is a UK First or 2:1 honours degree or a UK Master’s degree in the relevant discipline. Equivalent international qualification may also be acceptable.

Students without a relevant degree, or the required classification, should consider a school of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences taught MSc course before applying to become a PhD candidate.

Applications are accepted throughout the year by Graduate Research Support. Programme start dates are 1st October, 1st February, and 1st May. Further information regarding research degree programmes, university fees, and making an application can be found at:

Student Scholarships

International students studying at postgraduate level are awarded a £1,500 scholarship in each year of study. This is automatically applied to reduce your total annual tuition fee.
