About the University of Macau

The University of Macau (UM) was founded in 1981. Through 37 years of development, it has grown to be the best university, and also the only comprehensive public university, in Macao. UM is ranked among the top 400 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2019. In the Asia-Pacific University Rankings and the Young University Rankings, it is ranked No 62 and No 60, respectively. In the QS rankings, its ranking also rising steadily to No 443 in 2019.

UM offers more than 130 bachelor’s, master’s, PhD and other programmes, through its Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Business Administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Health Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences, Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering, Institute of Collaborative Innovation, and Honours College. English is the main medium of instruction at UM, with some programmes being taught in Chinese, Portuguese, or Japanese. It has Asia’s largest residential college system, which works in concert with the faculty-based system to deliver whole-person education. In the World University Rankings by Subject, UM is ranked among the top 200 both in Engineering and Technology, and in Computer Sciences; in the 201-250 bracket in Education; No 46 in Hospitality and Leisure Management; No 151-200 in Linguistics, and in the 251-300 bracket in Law. It is ranked among the top 1% in ESI (Essential Sciences Indicators) rankings in five subjects, namely Clinical Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Computer Science, and Social Sciences, General.
