The Department of Cellular Biochemistry in Göttingen, Germany opens a PhD position

Biomedical research, cellular communication, mitochondria, mitochondrial disorders
Fixed-term, Part-time | Salary according to TV-L

The University Medical Center Göttingen is a tertiary care center and offers great development potential. Its 7,700 employees work in over 65 departments and facilities to provide top-quality patient care, excellent research and modern teaching. Göttingen, “City of Science”, located near the center of Germany, the University Medical Center Göttingen is embedded in the city’s attractive network of scientific research facilities.

Mitochondria are essential cellular compartments, associated with a heterogeneous group of human disorders with varying clinical symptoms. Malfunction of mitochondria has been linked to neurodegeneration, such as Alzheimer- and Parkinson disease as well as to diabetes and cancer, since mitochondria synthesize critical metabolites and provide the majority of cellular energy. Moreover, mitochondrial defects alter various cellular signaling pathways, impacting numerous cellular functions. Therefore, signaling cascades monitor mitochondrial functions and enable the cell to respond to mitochondrial stress. Accordingly, an active crosstalk between mitochondria and cellular organelles is in place, facilitated by a variety of quality control processes, such as protein quality control, mitophagy and apoptosis.

We are aiming to investigate the communication between mitochondria and their cellular environment during mitochondrial dysfunction. The central questions are how the expression of nuclear-encoded mitochondrial proteins changes during mitochondrial incapability and which proteins are involved in these signaling pathways. Our analyses will help to understand the diverse clinical presentation of patients and mitochondrial functions within the cell.

We are looking for highly motivated, creative, and innovative students with interests in molecular biology and biochemistry. The PhD student will get the opportunity to use a broad range of techniques (e.g. CRISPR/CAS; siRNA library screen; gene promotor analysis) in the course of the project. The project will be carried out in the Department of Cellular Biochemistry (headed by Prof. Peter Rehling). Good English skills are required to be integrated into the international research group in Göttingen.

If you are interested or have further questions, please do not hesitate to get in contact.

Please send your application as PDF including a cover letter, CV, copies of exams, two letters of reference and a list of publications (if appropriate).
