October 2019 – PhD studentship opportunities

Research area: modelling and data science for urban environment and health research

We welcome applications for funded three-year PhD studentships to start in October 2019. This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious researcher to join an interdisciplinary research project on data analytics, modelling and global environment and health.

The students will develop expertise in the application of analytical methods and tools from computer science, statistics/maths, and physics, to model the impacts of policy scenarios on the environment and health in cities in high- and low-income countries. The PhD research will have particular focus on using emerging data and novel methods such as machine learning to characterise cities’ environment and health, with emphasis on within-city variations and inequalities.

The studentships will be based in the Environment and Global Health Research Group (www.globalenvhealth.org/) at Imperial’s School of Public Health, which was ranked as the UK's joint top institution for world-leading public health research according to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. The group is internationally renowned for its research on spatiotemporal analysis of multi-dimensional health and environmental data. The group is highly interdisciplinary and the students will work closely with a range of backgrounds and disciplines in the group, at other parts of Imperial (e.g., Data Science Institute and the Urban Systems Laboratory in the Faculty of Engineering) and at other leading global universities.

Applicants should have, or expect to receive, a first or upper second class degree or equivalent in mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, statistics, economics or related discipline, and have exceptional quantitative/computational preparation.

The research group is part of the MRC-PHE Centre for Environment and Health (www.environment-health.ac.uk); the Centre has an established training programme for early career researchers, which provides bespoke training and development, pastoral care, and extensive opportunities for networking and collaboration.

Studentships will include tuition fees and a minimum stipend of £18,000 per annum for UK and EU nationals.
