Funded 4 year Integrated PhD in Biomedical Science
The Cell Biology and Immunology of Cancer pathway
The University of Southampton is one of the top 15 research-led universities in the UK. We are a vibrant and ambitious Faculty with a leading reputation in research, enterprise and education. With an emphasis on translating new discoveries into healthcare practice, our research covers the spectrum from basic science to clinical innovation.
Integrated PhD
Our four year Integrated PhD in Biomedical Science has been designed to produce the next generation of leaders in cancer research, one of the major research strengths of the University of Southampton.
Studying high-quality basic science, delivered in a clinically relevant way, will enable you to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a career in academia, health, industry and other related sectors.
Our research themes include basic and translational immunology, immunotherapy and DNA vaccines, as well as the molecular and genetic study of cancer to understand mechanisms of disease proliferation, invasion and cell death.
In year 1 you will choose three laboratory rotation projects within the Cancer Sciences Unit, which will give you the opportunity to work with our research groups who are at the cutting edge of tumour biology and immunology. Lab rotations are supplemented with taught specialist and advanced research skills modules, including Statistical Methods and Quantitative Cell Biology, with practical introduction to bioinformatics techniques and computational modelling, using large clinically-relevant datasets. You will also learn diverse practical skills in a range of areas which will help you make an informed choice about the project you will undertake over the following three years. Successful completion of year 1 is marked with the award of MRes.
Years 2-4 comprises an in-depth research project in the subject area of your choice, which will draw upon experience gained in year 1. Our aim is for you to become an active and valued member of a research lab led by one of our many expert scientists.
