The University of Glasgow

Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow is the fourth oldest University in the English-speaking world and ranked 73rd in the world (QS World University Rankings 2018). We are the first UK university to be rated as 5 Stars Plus overall (QS World University Rankings 2015) and have recently embarked on a major £1bn investment to support a world-changing campus development project.

The College

The College of Science and Engineering, which comprises six Schools and one research centre, holds over £170 million of research funding and is home to more than 1000 PhD students working on a wide range of research projects. Research in the College ranges from the core disciplines of Chemistry, Computing Science, Engineering, Geographical and Earth Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics and Astronomy to interdisciplinary areas such as materials, nanotechnology, sensors, systems biology and chemical biology. We are also involved in multidisciplinary research on societal issues such as energy and sustainability, transportation, health and ageing.

There are exciting opportunities to undertake cutting-edge and innovative research in our advanced facilities, not only in established discipline-based areas, but also in cross-cutting research themes where our core strengths are combined, such as digital economy, energy, healthcare technology, sensors and intelligent imaging, sustainable high-value manufacturing and underpinning capabilities.

Applicants have the opportunity to work with world-leading academics in their field. Our PhD students benefit from being part of an innovative and supportive Graduate School community, and from an excellent transferable skills development programme. They also have the opportunity to apply for mobility scholarships, which support travel to work at other sites world-wide.

College Scholarships 2023

The scholarship provides an annual stipend in line with the Research Council rate and tuition fees (currently £18,622). It is available to home/EU students and international students.

Applications should be submitted online by 31 January 2024. Candidates who have not identified a supervisor and outlined a project will not be considered.

Other Scholarships

The College has a considerable portfolio of scholarships available – from funding to join our prestigious Centres for Doctoral Training to specific interdisciplinary project funding.

Rogers Scholars Fund

Exceptional PhD applicants who have completed their undergraduate degree at a Scottish University before taking up a place at the University of Glasgow will also be considered for the Rogers Scholars Fund which provides a stipend enhancement of £2,000 plus a travel/equipment budget of £1-2,000 per year.
