4 year fully-funded interdisciplinary PhD studentships at The Quadram Institute

The Quadram Institute, on the Norwich Research Park, is offering a number of PhD studentships, to start in October 2018.

This is an exciting time to have the opportunity to be at the forefront of a new era of food and health research.

Recent understanding of how food and our gut microbiome interact is creating a fundamental shift in the way we will understand and address the impact of food on health. Housed in a new state-of-the-art building at the heart of the Norwich Research Park, the Quadram Institute has been established to be at the forefront of these new interfaces between food science, gut biology, human health and disease. QI is undertaking interdisciplinary research across four themes: the gut and the microbiome; food innovation; food safety and population health.

You will be working and studying in a great environment. The Norwich Research Park boasts 230 hectares of open parkland on the outskirts of the city of Norwich. Norwich itself is a vibrant city, with a superb quality of life, great entertainment, a unique mix of ancient and modern architecture. Surrounded by open countryside, the Norfolk Broads National Park and beautiful coastline are also close by. Norwich is also a top 10 UK shopping centre and has good links to London and internationally, via the Norwich International Airport.

The current studentships are offered through the BBSRC-funded Norwich Research Park Doctoral Training Partnership Programme. These DTP studentships are fully-funded for 4 years, and include a three month professional internship. All students are provided with a Personal Professional Development Plan to help develop your research skills and prepare you for your future career, whether within academia or in other professions.

By studying for a PhD with us, you will join one of our small, dedicated research teams that are managed by supervisors with international reputations in their fields. But a PhD here will also see you become part of a community of 3,000 scientists on the Norwich Research Park, working collaboratively to answer fundamental challenges in food, diet, health and the environment.

You will be part of the enthusiastic, self-supporting student community, represented by the Quadram Student Forum, which also provides support, mentoring, and a full range of student-led activities and events.

Students in the Quadram Institute benefit from high standards of supervisory practice and mentoring for graduate students, which include our close links and proximity to the University of East Anglia (UEA), the only English mainstream university to achieve a top 5 ranking for student satisfaction every year since the survey began in 2005. You will enjoy full access to joint courses at UEA designed to develop generic professional skills, and be welcomed as part of the UEA’s postgraduate student community.
