PhD Positions in Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano

PhD Positions in Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano

Our Programme is currently seeking applicants for 22 PhD positions, 19 of which fully-funded by a scholarship.

Candidates with scholarship (net salary 1.400 euro/month) will receive extra- funding (700 euro/month) for research periods abroad, and all positions will benefit from financial aid for research materials and conferences.

Applicants must hold an MSc degree (or equivalent) and certified English language proficiency.

The proposed PhD paths have a standard duration of 3 years, and will be performed in one of the following research lines, where selected research topics are available:

1) Dynamics and vibrations of mechanical systems and vehicles (2 scholarships):

This research line is organized into five research areas, namely Mechatronics and Robotics, Rotodynamic, Wind Engineering, Road Vehicle Dynamics, Railway Dynamics. It features modelling of linear and non-linear dynamic systems, stability and self-excited vibrations, active control of mechanical systems, condition monitoring and diagnostics.

2) Machine and Vehicle Design (4 scholarships)

This research line is involved in advanced design methods and fitness for purpose of mechanical components. Gears, pressure vessels and helicopter components are dealt with. Optimal design and testing of vehicle systems create a synergism between the theoretical and the experimental researches on ground vehicles.

3) Manufacturing and Production Systems (4 scholarships):

This research field gives relevance to the problem of optimal transformation of raw materials into final products, addressing all issues related with the introduction, usage, and evolution of technologies and production systems during the entire product life-cycle.

4) Materials (4 scholarships):

This research line focuses on the study of production process and characterization of materials, for structural and functional applications. The research projects carried out in recent years addressed specifically the following research topics: Steelmaking and Metallurgical Processes, Advanced Materials and Applied Metallurgy.

5) Measurements and experimental techniques (3 scholarships):

The Mechanical and Thermal Measurements (MTM) group has its common background in the development and qualification of new measurements techniques, as well as in the customization and application of well-known measurement principles in innovative fields.

6) Methods and Tools for Production Design (2 scholarships):

This Research Lines deals with methods and instruments used to support the product development cycle and covers all the different design stages, ranging from conception of the product to its development, with particular emphasis on the techniques of virtual prototyping and integrated management of the information concerning the life cycle of the product.

PhD Positions in Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano

Our PhD is a key instrument to access leading academic and non-academic positions at national and international level within universities and research institutions, large industrial and consulting companies, SMEs. Our Department ranks 7th in the world according to QS World University Rankings, and 1st in Italy (Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering 2023).

We have ongoing collaborations with a wide network of national and international companies and SMEs, resulting in industry-based research grants and also leading to a 100% employment rate of our doctorates after one year, with higher salary rates with respect to master title holders in the same field.

We strongly recommend and support candidates’ mobility abroad, for short-term study and research periods up to 18 months. We promote, draft and activate European and extra-European Joint Degrees, Double PhDs and Joint Doctoral Thesis. Our Institution is member of Idea League, Alliance4Tech and ENHANCE, three strategic partnerships with leading European Technical Universities.
