Studentship Description
Even with smoking prevalence at a record low in the UK, tobacco smoking remains the leading preventable cause of cancer. Accelerating the decline in prevalence in the UK from the rate in the past 10 years of 0.7% to more than 1% each year is achievable and would yield an additional 120,000 fewer smokers each year. Increasing smoking cessation rates is crucial for this. Combatting smoking requires cutting-edge behavioural science. While significant advances have been made in the science of smoking cessation, there is a pressing need to continue the scientific effort; each discovery leads to important new research questions and the context is continually changing, creating new challenges and opportunities. Technological advances are opening new possibilities with regard to delivery of smoking cessation support. This PhD would feed into and support a new UCL programme that aims to advance and integrate population and individual approaches to smoking cessation.
