About the Programme

"A premium programme, our four-year PhD in Management will produce exceptional scholars who are sought-after by leading business schools, universities and research institutions around the world."

WHY SURREY?
Academics at Surrey Business School have an international reputation for research that shapes the agendas of scholarship and practice.

We see doctoral students as important collaborators in this work, challenging them with new ideas that develop them as critical researchers, as well as helping them build a solid grounding in research methods and statistics. We also provide access to international experts through research seminars at the Faculty, and the possibility for international conference attendance to ensure the highest quality feedback.

Our high standards are reflected in our multiple accreditations, and our close links with national and international businesses of all sizes and across all sectors.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Responding to an increasing demand for more structured PhD programmes, we have developed a doctoral programme that involves two years of training followed by two years that focus on independent research. A premium programme, our four-year PhD in Management will produce exceptional scholars who are sought-after by leading business schools, universities and research institutions around the world.

As part of the programme, you will be trained in a wide range of research approaches and methods, get extensive exposure to the relevant theories in your specialised field, as well as an overview of the broader management field. You will also get training that focuses on developing your research project, and your first academic paper, as well as skills for presenting at academic conferences. The programme will also provide you with the opportunity to gain significant teaching experience. These skills will equip you to become a well-rounded academic and produce high-quality academic papers, which will enhance your employability for top academic roles. These increasingly require PhD graduates to already have publications, teaching experience and the ability to master both quantitative and qualitative research approaches.

You will begin with an idea for your research project at the start of the programme and develop the area of your thesis during this process. Over the course of the programme, you will produce a dissertation (assessed by viva voce) that lends itself to the production of at least three papers publishable in top-tier journals. As such, the programme is suited to those who wish to develop high-level research skills: future academics in particular, but also candidates considering roles that involve significant research skills such as research and development in business, or government advisory and other policy-influencing bodies.
Many of the courses will integrate lectures by experts and guest speakers both from within the Faculty and externally, who are researching at the frontiers of their subjects.

There are no subsidiary exit awards at the end of the teaching elements at Year 1 or Year 2.

Personal and professional development
We take your development as a well-rounded PhD academic seriously and have put together a package of development opportunities that we believe will develop your research and teaching skills and put you in the best position to secure employment at the end of the programme. From Year 1, you are expected to play an active role in the research community of the School.

In addition to the Researcher Development Programme, which is provided centrally to all PhD students at the University of Surrey, we offer a wide range of other learning opportunities.

Professional recognition
Surrey Business School is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and by the Association of MBAs (AMBA).
