New, funded PhD studentships to develop the next generation of highly skilled researchers are available at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit, University of Glasgow, starting in September 2019. We have a particular focus on developing and using cutting-edge methods to understand how social, behavioural, economic, political and environmental factors influence health. We work with decision makers, practitioners and the public to identify interventions and policies that can have an effective and sustained impact on health and wellbeing, particularly among those most in need. Our staff and students have joined us from all over the world, and come from a range of academic disciplines. We are offering three-year studentships to those who have a Masters degree, or equivalent training with a research component, in a relevant scientific discipline. We can also offer, over a four-year period, an opportunity for postgraduate students to gain an appropriate Masters degree prior to starting a doctorate (‘1+3 studentships'). For most students a particularly relevant Masters Programme will be the new taught Programme in The Development and Evaluation of Interventions, with core courses in the Development of Interventions, Evaluation Design and The Fundamentals of Evaluation. Others that might be relevant are the taught Masters in Sociology and Research Methods and the taught Masters in Public Health. To support our students' development we provide training in all aspects of research and in transferable academic and generic skills. Find out more about being a PhD student at the Unit. We are based within the Institute of Health and Wellbeing, and work closely with our colleagues across both the College of Social Sciences and the College of Medical, Veterinary, and Life Sciences.

• Personal statement (This should provide any other required information in support of the application, such as evidence of previous academic or professional experience that qualifies you for the programme (projects; placements; voluntary work etc). You should state the reasons why you selected this programme and what benefit you hope to achieve through successful completion of the PhD. The statement should include any research projects in which you have been involved. The statement should not be longer than one A4 page).
