About the Programme

Durham University's Department of Philosophy is a centre for world-class research in a wide range of fields, including the following:

• Aesthetics
• Ethics
• Environmental philosophy
• Feminism
• History and philosophy of science and medicine (including the social sciences and economics)
• Metaphysics
• Phenomenology and Continental philosophy
• Philosophy of mind and action

The Department is home to the Centre for Humanities Engaging Science and Society (CHESS) and it has strong links with several interdisciplinary centres, such as the Centre for the Ethics of Cultural Heritage and the Centre for the History of Medicine and Disease.

The Department's research environment obtained outstanding scores (60% ‘world leading', 40% ‘internationally excellent') in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework. Its PhD students receive training on topics such as writing for publication, and from Year 2 onwards almost all of them gain experience teaching undergraduate classes. Each year, PhD students in Philosophy organise and participate in various reading groups, workshops and conferences as well as meetings of EIDOS, the Department's highly active postgraduate philosophy society. Recent graduates have taken up academic positions at the University of Nottingham, Trinity College Dublin and the University of Cambridge.
