Program description
The PhD Program requires the completion of at least 180 ECTS, allocated to the preparation of the course/s, the research proposal, the pilot study, the main study, data analysis and the thesis. The Programme has been structured into six (6) distinct phases (semesters), each consisting of 30 ECTS.
Duration of Study
The minimum duration for completing the Doctoral Degree in Psychology is three (3) years and the maximum is five (5) years.
Program Objectives
The aim of the PhD program in Psychology are to educate and train psychology researchers who, depending on their specialization area, will be able to use scientific methods investigate and deal with factors that affect behaviours, cognitive process, and emotion. Doctoral students are expected to design and execute an independent original research project and produce a Thesis (maximum 80,000 words). Through their research project students are expected to evidence an original contribution to knowledge, develop or apply innovative research or intervention methods, and as a result advance scientific knowledge in an area of psychology.
Specific aims of the program are to:
a. Develop students' in depth understanding and critical analysis of current literature and research methodology in the field of psychology
b. Develop students' understanding and application of suitable research methodologies and scientific methods of investigation to enable them to carry out their doctoral research project.
c. Enhance students' research skills and facilitate the development of expertise relevant to their research specialization area.
d. Educate students in how to disseminate research findings, conclusions and suggestions for improving educational or mental health provision to the scientific community, for example through publishing in academic journals and/or presenting their work in academic conferences and seminars.
e. Give students a broad understanding of research approaches and methods which will enable them to read and comprehend a wide range of academic research papers to enhance their research competence and facilitate the development of future research activities.
Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of the period of doctoral study, students are expected to:
1. Comprehend basic principles of research design, including an understanding of how to conceptualize psychological research, formulate researchable problems, and construct and test hypotheses
2. Show competence in applying a range of research methods and tools
3. Be able to manage successfully all the stages of a research project, including managing data, and conducting and disseminating research in a way that is consistent with both professional practice and the normal principles of research ethics
4. Understand and appreciate of the significance of alternative epistemological positions that provide the context for theory construction, research design and the selection of appropriate data analysis techniques
5. Understand and apply the concepts of generalisability, validity, reliability and replicability and identify potential biases in the interpretation of research findings
6. Develop a sound understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of a range of research methodologies and data collection methods
7. Evidence competence in the use of quantitative and qualitative methodologies in psychological enquiry and exhibit skills in the use of quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods
8. Be in a position to illustrate and critically evaluate research methods used in psychological enquiry and demonstrate aptitude in the preparation, execution and management of an independent large-scale research study
9. Develop skills in the dissemination of findings to the wider academic community, initially through writing-up their Thesis and then through publishing their work in academic journals and/or giving presentations in academic conferences and seminars
10. Acknowledge the impact of their own experiences, beliefs and culture on the processes and outcomes of inquiry, as well as the interpretation of findings, and through this process become reflexive researchers
