Applications are invited from self-funded full-time applicants to undertake a PhD in the School of Psychology at the University of Sunderland. Applications for part-time study or an MPhil will also be considered. The university is currently ranked 2nd in overall student satisfaction in the 2018 postgraduate research student experience survey.
Supervisory expertise in the school includes autobiographical memory, brain organisation and cognition, cognition and emotion, health and wellbeing, police interview techniques with vulnerable individuals, online trust and disclosure, social cognition in autism, and sexuality; as well as expertise in environmental psychology, evolutionary psychology, cyberpsychology, positive psychology, and the psychology of learning. Applicants are required to submit a 2-3 page research proposal which specifies the research aims, a statement of the original contribution to knowledge which you expect to emerge from the research, the rationale for the research question(s), proposed methodology and techniques for analysis, and a provisional time plan for the research.
Entry requirements
The normal entry requirement for a research degree in psychology is a UK honours degree in Psychology (first or 2:1) or a UK Master's degree in Psychology (or an international qualification that is regarded as equivalent). Students without a degree in Psychology should consider the School's taught MSc Psychology conversion course before applying for a PhD.
Fees
All international students studying at postgraduate level are awarded a £1,500 scholarship in each year of study. You do not have to apply for this scholarship; it is automatically applied to reduce your total annual tuition fee. The University of Sunderland is an eligible institution for U.S. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (Federal School Code: G35073) and Canada Student Loan Programme (EI Code: PUFL).
Applications are accepted throughout the year by Graduate Research Support. Programme start dates are 1st October, 1st February, and 1st May.
