The digital divide: from social to digital inequalities (RDF16/MED/RAGNEDDA)
The project will incorporate both theoretical ideas and empirical analyses in order to bring fresh perspectives to debates around the forms of digital and social inequality and sketch a concept of inequalities in the digital sphere: the successful candidate will develop innovative ways through which to study digitally enabled networked societies. The influence of place, experience, power, social, cultural, economic and knowledge backgrounds influence will be important foci for analysis.
Environmental communication in the public sphere (RDF16/MED/MORENO-ESPARZA)
This project is concerned with the public communication and media coverage of the environment. Possible topics could include: public reception of environmental communication and their potential for involvement in discursive spaces through new media technologies; processes of disintermediation where communities of professional practice from government agencies, corporations, NGOs, universities, think tanks and charities, have taken control of their own processes of public communication.
The industrial contexts of European cinema (RDF16/MED/HUNTER)
We welcome applicants interested in aspects of European film industries including: film festivals (especially genre festivals); national and transnational production practices and histories; distribution arrangements; exhibition; regional, national and international funding of European film production; and the industrial role of film genres and film cycles. The proposed research is likely to involve a range of methods such as archive-based activity, analysis of industry data and interviews with industry practitioners.
Media in Everyday Life and Relationships (RDF16/MED/RALPH)
A growing body of work within the media audience research tradition explores the role of media in everyday life and its function within everyday relationships. Topics of interest include: media consumption and everyday family life; media in personal/family relationships; particular media/cultural products and their role in social identity; committed media audiences and the use of online social spaces; feminism and popular media; memories of media and cultural products or media consumption environments.
Real-time Audio-Visuals (RDF16/MED/GIBSON)
Many approaches to this topic are possible: practice-based, historical, theoretical and/or formal and the successful candidate will outline innovative ways of looking at Real-time Audio-Visuals theory and production. Areas of interest include: formal and theoretical implications of Live Audio-Visuals production; role of audience interaction in Live Audio-Visuals; historical connections between cinema, video art, electronic music, and/or installation art and Live Audio-Visuals; use of new interfaces for interaction with Audio-Visuals in real-time; and motion-based interaction with real-time Audio-Visuals.
Tangible User Interfaces: Shape Changing Interface/s (RDF16/MED/SALEM)
We welcome applications for this interaction-design project on diverse aspects including: aesthetics of the device where shape, appearance and other attributes are subject to changes, with/without human agency; a metaphoric representation of content, relying on common concepts and matching some of the user intentions towards that content; self-actuated changes to the device's intrinsic physical attributes; choreography and experience, resulting in usage rituals and achievements experienced while interacting with the device.
Funding Notes
The studentship includes a full stipend, paid for three years at RCUK rates (in 2016/17 this is £14,296 pa) and fees (Home/EU £4,350 / International £13,000).
Eligibility and How to Apply
• Academic excellence of the proposed student i.e. normally an Honours Degree: 1st or 2:1 (or equivalent) or possession of a Masters degree, with merit (or equivalent study at postgraduate level). Applicants may also be accepted on the basis of relevant and substantial practitioner/professional experience.
• Appropriate IELTS score, if required (evidence required by 1 August).
