Are you interested in applying the theories and methods of operations management and systems research to understanding and promoting the safety of care transitions in healthcare systems? If so, we have a PhD studentship at Nottingham University Business School's Centre for Health Innovation, Leadership & Learning (CHILL), in collaboration with NIHR CLAHRC East Midlands and NIHR Greater Manchester Patient Safety Translational Research Centre that might interest you.
The focus of the PhD relates to the quality and safety of patient care transitions, such as hospital discharge or transfer of care between service providers. Research shows that care transitions can be a high-risk stage in the patient journey because of the difficulties of coordinating multiple organisations and specialists.
The PhD involves translating and applying theories and methods from organisational studies, operations management or management sciences to better understand and improve the quality of care transitions. Applicants are encouraged to suggest the exact theoretical and methodological focus, based upon their background, experience and interests. We are particularly interested in candidates that have the ability to analyse data on transition processes and that can develop skills to model such processes.
The PhD will be part of the Business and Management programme at Nottingham University Business School.
This funded PhD will commence in Autumn 2017. A yearly full-time stipend at current RCUK rates (£14,553), plus UK/EU student tuition fees (£4,195), is available to the successful applicant.
Applicants should have:
• A 2.1 or higher honours degree in a social science, and
• A Masters degree which includes a substantial research element, with an average score of over 65% in the taught modules and 65% or above in the dissertation.
The successful applicant will be expected to visit research sites on a regular basis and should be able to travel across the East Midlands.
