The University of Bristol's School of Economics, Finance and Management is a thriving centre for teaching and research in a range of disciplines: accounting, economics, finance, and management. We have an active and successful PhD programme, and over 50 research-active staff, publishing in top international journals.
A strong research environment can make a major contribution to successful PhD study. The high quality of the School's research environment was illustrated in the most recent UK-wide research assessment, REF2014. 88 per cent of the research activity of the Department of Economics was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, and 78 per cent of the research activity in Business and Management rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. The REF2014 results place the School of Economics, Finance and Management among the leading schools in the UK.

The PhD Programme
We welcome applications for our PhD programmes in accounting and finance, economics and management. We offer both full and part-time PhD study. The PhD programme can be studied full-time over three years (maximum four) or part-time over six years.
For successful PhD study, a good match between a student's research interests and those of their supervisors is vital. Our supervisors are active in research and often experts in their fields. On our website, we list potential supervisors and their main supervision interests.
Full-time PhD students are typically allocated study space and a computer, as well as access to excellent libraries and a range of drop-in study spaces around the University. IT provision is flexible and allows scope for remote working when convenient.
We offer financial support to our PhD students for the costs of conference and workshop attendance. The Bristol Doctoral College (BDC) offers research training to support PhD students at various stages of their work. Opportunities to access training are also available through the South West Doctoral Training Centre (SWDTC). The SWDTC and BDC allow students to network with a wide range of staff and students, and provide a range of training opportunities. Interested students can also investigate opportunities to undertake teaching within the School, with relevant training available.
As well as supporting PhD study within the School's main disciplines, we also have a strong track record in supervising interdisciplinary research across a wider range of areas.
