About the Programme

The University of Aberdeen offers the following exciting opportunity for international doctoral study in Creative Writing.

The Project
This project explores the literatures of travel and travel writing through a literary and/or creative writing lens. Projects could include: creative uses of travel in prose literature (novel or short story collection); writing a travel narrative (creative non-fiction); analysis of travel writing; examination of tropes of travel in fiction, non-fiction or poetry. Topics to explore via these forms might include: comparison of Australian and Scottish literatures of travel; historical travel writing; newer forms of travel writing (eg multi-media or experimental writing about travel); contested issues in travel writing (eg the role of the tourist, new environmental perspectives, post-colonial perspectives); other aspects of creative writing and travel.

The main component of this project will consist of an extended and original piece of creative writing in prose (for example a novel, collection of short stories, or creative non-fiction travel narrative). As a guide, prose works should total between 40,000 and 60,000 words. The secondary, critical component (normally 30,000 words) will consist of both a scholarly and reflexive analysis of the theoretical and aesthetic contexts relevant to the candidate's creative progress and his/her technical and expressive objectives.
