About the Programme

PhD Scholarships at University College Dublin School of Economics

UCD School of Economics is a research-intensive department with experts with international reputations in a wide range of topics such as applied microeconomics, international trade, health economics, econometrics, macroeconomics and economic history. Our faculty have recent or forthcoming articles in leading journals such as the Journal of Political Economy, Review of Economic Studies, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Economic Journal, Journal of Finance and Review of Economics and Statistics. School members have also published important articles in fields such as applied mathematics, biology, political science, public health, psychology and social history.

PhD Scholarships

We are pleased to announce a scholarship scheme for applicants to our PhD programme in 2017/18. These scholarships will comprise an annual tax-free annual stipend of between €12,000 and €15,000 plus a full waiver of fees. The stipend and fee waiver will continue to be provided to students up to and including their fourth year of PhD studies, subject to their continuing to make satisfactory progress in their studies and meeting the terms and conditions of their scholarship. Students in receipt of a Scholarship are required to work as tutors in either undergraduate or graduate modules taught by the School of Economics. This taught component will amount to no more than 50 hours of teaching during each of our 12-week teaching semesters.

Topics for Supervision

We encourage PhD applicants in the following areas.

• Applied Microeconomics topics such as contract theory, game theory, industrial organisation, and political contests.
• Behavioural Economics topics including financial decision making, inter-temporal choice and behavioural public policy.
• Health Economics topics such as economics of human development, impact of early childhood experiences, effectiveness of early intervention programs, mental health and health insurance.
• Labour Economics topics such as affirmative action, economics of education, efficiency wages, labour markets in developing countries, migration, minimum wages, and search.
• Public Economics topics including trends in corporate taxation, determinants of poverty, income inequality, and international taxation.
• Regional and Urban Economics topics such as location analysis, spatial analysis, and transport economics.
• Empirical Macroeconomics topics including growth and development, the interaction between the financial sector and the macro-economy and historical analysis.
• International Economics topics including international trade and foreign direct investment.

Application Process

Before applying for the scholarship, applicants must have a firm or conditional offer of a place on our PhD programme. This programme can be applied for here.

Details on the selection criteria for the award of scholarships are here. Applications for scholarships must be submitted on or before 18th of May 2017. The school will then conduct interviews with each finalist, either in person or via phone or Skype. Scholarships will be awarded on approximately May 31, 2017. Successful applicants have until 15 June 2017 to notify the school of their decision whether or not to accept the scholarship.

For students who are unsuccessful in applying for a PhD scholarship, we offer other forms of financial assistance, including fee waivers, hourly tutoring contracts, and grading exams.
