About the Programme

PhD: 3 years full-time; 6 years part-time
MPhil: 2 years full-time; 4 years part-time

Entry Requirements: An honours degree [2:1 or above] or equivalent overseas qualification.

The Institute for Diplomacy and International Governance distinguishes itself as a leader in diplomatic teaching and research, by responding to the needs of governments, organisations and multi-national corporations. 


Studying a research degree at Loughborough University London is a unique opportunity for self-discovery and independent study, where students will receive expert guidance from a minimum of two supervisors.

The Institute for Diplomacy and International Governance is actively engaged in research projects which focus on national and international issues and their relevance to diplomatic practice, international security, trade and finance and communication. 

The Institute currently leads research into the following areas. These are not exclusive and we encourage potential candidates to contact us for discussion before submitting an application:

• The European Union
• The UK and transatlantic relations, especially their security dimensions
• London and other global cities
• Terrorism, extremism and radicalisation
• Russia-West relations
• International political communication and diplomatic discourse
• Critical and normative approaches to diplomacy
• Minorities and international governance and diplomacy visual culture and political voic

The Institute offers outstanding facilities and academic support for PhD students throughout their studies. All of our academic staff are well connected within their field and offer our PhD students a stimulating and inspiring research experience.

PhD students will benefit from modern study spaces where they will benefit from the guidance provided by an outstanding academic team, who maintain an unrivalled track record in the teaching of Diplomacy, International Governance and other related disciplines. PhD students will also receive specialist research training and support to develop a professional diplomatic research career, or enter a regional, international and multinational organisation or governing body.

Research students within the Academy of Diplomacy and International Governance form part of a diverse and vibrant interdisciplinary research community.

The campus forms part of Loughborough University, which is affiliated with over a hundred research centres, groups and institutes.
