Heriot-Watt University is a world-class, research-led university with a drive to create and apply knowledge for economic and societal benefit. The REF 2014 assessed Heriot-Watt top in Scotland and 9th university in the UK for research impact, with 82% of our research assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent. Edinburgh Business School (EBS) is the graduate school of business of Heriot-Watt University. We are one of the world's largest providers of postgraduate business education. EBS at Heriot-Watt University is undergoing a process of expansion in terms of research activity and research capacity. As a consequence we are seeking to fulfil a number of research-related vacancies.
We are looking to appoint a number of PhD students. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a growing Business School in an internationally renowned university where you will engage in PhD study full time.
There are four bursaries available in total. Firstly, funding is available for two students for three years of full time study. Your research study will be supervised by leading international scholars. We are interested in applications focusing on work, employment, society and entrepreneurship as well as strategy and work organisation. For further information please contact Professor Abigail Marks, Director of Research and Doctoral Programmes (am3@ebs.hw.ac.uk)
EBS has recently obtain Panmure House, the only remaining home of Adam Smith and to celebrate this, whilst not exclusively, we are particularly interested in looking for students that are broadly interested in areas of study that are related to the concerns of Adam Smith. For example, projects that focus on Smith's concerns about philosophy, political science, history, economics, anthropology, and sociology are especially encouraged.
There will also be a further two PhD bursaries for scholars interested in conducting research under the auspices and supervision of staff associated with the Centre for Networks and Enterprise. We are looking for highly motivated researchers who have training in quantitative and qualitative methods in social research. We welcome applications in all fields of business studies that employ networks as a theoretical or methodological frame. We particularly welcome applications from prospective students interested in topics associated to network analysis in the fields of careers progression, interlocking directors, start-up finance, entrepreneurship, leadership and the social economy.
The CNE was set-up in March 2017 following the appointment of a new Executive Dean to the Edinburgh Business School. Its stated aim is to facilitate research in network science for the business community. The Executive Dean, Professor Heather McGregor is assisted by the Director of the Centre, Dr Dimitris Christopoulos (dc1@ebs.hw.ac.uk), a team of research assistants and a number of EBS scholars to conduct applied research and facilitate learning. The Centre is currently supporting research on gender and boardroom interlocks, social entrepreneurship, finance syndication and careers. A common feature of all the CNE projects is network informed interventions. CNE research is aimed at supporting people to achieve their potential and facilitating business to optimise operations.
All four bursaries includes tuition fee waiver for PhD at UK/EU fees and a stipend at £14,553 plus a research support allowance of £2,250 for the duration of your doctoral study. In order to be eligible for a Heriot Watt PhD, applicants should hold a first class or upper second class honours undergraduate degree (or equivalent international qualification) and a Master's degree (or equivalent) in a related subject. Candidates should be available to start by April/May 2018.
